EPL Round Up: Mario’s Back and Timmy’s Mad

Sandwiched between the Champions League Draw and the closing of the summer transfer window was a Week 3 of Premier League action which saw a few familiar faces returning to the EPL, a nine-goal thriller and Tim Howard taking on Chelsea’s Spanish contingent.

Neil Warnock and Wilfried Zaha marked their returns to Crystal Palace with an exciting 3-3 at St. James Park against Newcastle United. Palace had gotten Warnock’s 2nd reign at Palace off to a great start when they took the lead at the 30-second mark before trading leads with Newcastle. In the 5th of 7 minutes of added time Zaha knock home the tying goal after coming on as a sub in the 70th.

Palace and Newcastle weren’t the only teams to net three on Saturday. Nathan Dyer scored either side of a well taken Wayne Routledge volley as Swansea City beat West Bromiwch Albion to remain unbeaten. Southampton came back from a first half Mark Noble goal to beat West Ham 3-1 thanks in part to two goals from Morgan Schneiderlin, giving Ronald Koeman his first Premier League win.

The most excitement of the day came at Goodison Park where Everton fell to Chelsea 6-3. Everton were down 2-0 in the first five minutes but got themselves back into the game just before the end of the first half. In the second half Chelsea twice extended their lead to two goals only to see Everton cut it back to one before they finished it off with goals from Ramires and Diego Costa (the latter earning the ire from USMNT goalkeeper Tim Howard for his lack of respect).

Elsewhere on Saturday Charlie Austin opened his Premier League account as QPR beat Sunderland 1-0. Manchester United continued their slow start to the season as they tied Burnely 0-0 at Turf Moor while an ex Red Devil, Mame Biram Diouf, scored an excellent solo effort to help Stoke beat Manchester City 1-0.

The three games on Sunday failed to produce as many goals combined as Everton and Chelsea had on Saturday but did have some goals. Liverpool and their debutant Mario Balotelli were comfortable 3-0 winners against Spurs. The other two games saw Aston Villa continued their strong start to the season as they won 2-1 against Hull while Arsenal were only able to manage a 1-1 tie against newly promoted Leicester City.
